Collapsed on the night of November 25 to 26, 2019, following a torrential rain that fell in the city-province of Kinshasa, the Kianza bridge, connecting two municipalities, namely: Lemba and Ngaba, was rehabilitated and inaugurated last Tuesday by Willy Ngoopos, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Infrastructures and Public Works. Carried out by the FARDC military engineering corps, the work built in a frame box culvert is 12.40 meters long and 11.40 meters wide.
However, Willy Ngoopos took the opportunity to urge the inhabitants of two neighboring towns, through their mayors, to be civic.
During a brief ceremony in the morning, in the presence of representatives of the Office of Highways and Drainages, the Military Engineering Corps, and two municipalities, Willy Ngoopos proceeded to cut the symbolic ribbon. Before that, the Deputy Prime Minister made the populations of the surrounding neighborhoods aware of the need not to make this structure a spillway of waste of all kinds.
“I take this opportunity to invite the mayors of these two municipalities to constantly educate the populations on the importance of keeping this structure well. If people continue to throw plastic and other waste on this river, we will return to the same situation, ”he urged.
Speaking in turn, Major General Mbuyu, head of the military engineering corps, indicated that this work, launched in December 2019, was carried out in 4 stages; namely: the demolition of the existing structure, the cleaning of the river, the construction of a culvert and the development of access roads.
It was in the presence of the mayors of these two corners of the capital and of the populations who came to witness the reestablishment of traffic on this artery, blocked since November 2019. It should be remembered that two days after the collapse of the said bridge, that is to say the 28 November of the same year, the Head of State, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, visited the place to see the damage. It was on this occasion that he decided to entrust this work to the military engineers of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC).
