protection of the Lake Kivu ecosystem

A campaign to educate fishermen and shipowners on the standards of responsible fishing and the protection of the Lake Kivu ecosystem was launched this Friday, April 23, 2021 by the provincial coordination of the environment of South Kivu.

According to the head of the office in charge of nature conservation within this Bayubasire Bikaya coordination, this campaign will last one month, from April 23 to May 23, 2021.

He stressed that as part of this campaign, a surveillance system will be set up in Lake Kivu to ensure that fishermen respect the fear zones and floating cages.

Bayubasire Bikaya adds that the campaign also aims to limit the harassment suffered by fishermen in Lake Kivu and that they are not subject to the payment of illegal taxes from certain platforms of fishermen but also from certain elements of the security services.

Bikaya points out that in South Kivu 44 tracks spread across the territories of Kalehe, Idjwi, Kabare and the town of Bukavu are affected by this campaign. The activity is organized by the provincial coordination of the environment in partnership with the heads of fishermen’s associations working on Lake Kivu, according to our source.
